About this living lab

Our Living Lab in Rovaniemi, Lapland, is located amidst the stunning landscapes of the northern boreal forest in Finland. It encompasses 200 hectares in the commercial forest area under the stewardship of Metsähallitus.

The iconic Scots pine is the main tree species in this Living Lab. Our guiding management principles for this Living Lab are forest management for timber production, protection of biodiversity, and provision of ecosystem services.

Objectives and challenges

While currently characterized by even-aged management, our approach increasingly integrates uneven-aged management strategies, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity and ecological integrity.

Despite its pristine appearance, the Rovaniemi Lapland forest is not without its challenges. Balancing the diverse demands and needs placed upon these forests presents an ongoing management challenge.
